Report: 2.5 million acres suited to forestry
A recent report has identified 1.08m hectares of land currently used for agriculture as more suited to forestry. As these lands often have a higher proportion of difficult soils with low yields from agricultural activities, forestry can present a viable alternative.
The Land Availability for Afforestation – Exploring opportunities for Expanding Ireland’s Forest Resource report launched by Minister of State for Forestry, Tom Hayes, supports the government’s efforts to expand Ireland’s forest land resource. The Forestry Programme to 2020, which aims to expand forest cover by a further 43,000 hectares, offers attractive grant aid and premium payments over a 15 year period to landowners.
