SIMWOOD Mid-Term Conference 2015
SIMWOOD – the Sustainable Innovative Mobilisation of Wood – held their mid-term conference at the beginning of December 2015 in Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny Medieval City, Ireland and JFK Memorial Park & Arboretum, Wexford, Ireland.
With it’s Irish partners in this project -UCD, Forest Enterprises Ltd (FEL), and Irish Wood Producers Ltd – the SIMWOOD project aims to increase the mobilisation of wood from forests and woodlands in Europe. The project reaches out to stakeholders and regional initiatives with the aim of ‘waking up’ and mobilising forest owners, promoting collaborative forest management and ensuring sustainable forest functions.
SIMWOOD is a four-year EU FP7-KBBE collaborative project, with a total budget of 7.5 million euros. The European Commission contribution is 5.9 million euros. The project runs from November 2013 until October 2017.
The project concentrates on five research themes: forest governance; forest ownership;forest management; forest functions; forest harvesting.
The major Discussion point over the conference were:
- Forests are a major natural resource
- An increasing demand for wood
- Unlocking forest resources
- Socio-economic and technical barriers
- Environmental barriers
