Forest Thinning, Harvesting & Clear-Fell

Veon has over 25 years’ experience in harvesting from first thinning through to clear-fell. We have developed robust and strong systems to control harvesting operations, maximising income generated from your plantation while ensuring that the plantation maintains its productive potential.

Veon’s harvesting service is unsurpassed in Ireland. This service is a complete harvesting service where we project manage the entire operation working with you to achieve your desired result. CCTV security cameras are utilized on-site to protect your timber from theft.

Forest owners have waited patiently for their forests to grow. Thinning is the process of removing the lesser growing trees to ensure that the more valuable remaining crop is protected and enhanced with less competition for light and nutrients. And this final crop is where the real value exists for the forest owner.

This is a critical period for forest owners as conflicts of interest can arise where fees charged by contractors are based on the thinning volume removed thereby incentivising contractors to remove better growing trees which will have a major negative effect on the final value of the remaining crop.

Veon’s unique thinning service ensures we are not connected to the timber volume extracted as we charge on a rate per hectare basis. Therefore our fee cannot increase if too much timber is removed, or if the valuable timber is removed. Our role is to work solely on your behalf while protecting your forest and this method ensures there is no conflict of interest between Veon and the forest owner.

Veon’s Harvesting service

Timber measurement and Marketing

At the outset, Veon prepares the plantation by accurately measuring the standing timber. This data is then analysed by professional foresters to determine the appropriate prescription for your plantation. Veon will then market the timber for sale by tender to our select timber buyers. Once price is agreed, we provide a comprehensive timber sales contract and look after the payment arrangements. Before the operation begins Veon prepares a harvest plan and performs a health and safety assessment.

Harvesting supervision

A key part of Veon’s harvesting service is supervision. We supervise harvesting contractors to make sure the right trees are taken and to minimise damage to remaining trees and the environment.  We believe that all thinnings should be marked to ensure that the best trees remain and that the plantation is thinned consistently throughout. Timber marking is vital, as badly executed thinning can seriously affect the value of your final crop and significantly reduce your final forestry investment returns.

Post-harvesting crop and inventory management

Once the timber is brought to the roadside, we track timber movements using our timber docket tracking system to ensure that all timber is accounted for.  At the end of the operation we provide you with a Post Harvesting Report which reports on financial outcome, volume harvested, mapping and issues arising. We then enter your plantation into our system to remind you when it is time for the next operation.
