Harvesting

Road Construction

  • Before thinning can take place, it is necessary to construct a harvesting road to extract the timber. A strong harvesting road will add value to your plantation and reduce maintenance costs in the long term. Veon works with and on behalf of the forest owner to obtain the road grant and to obtain the necessary planning permission for the forest road.
  • The Forest Service provides grant aid up to 25 metres per ha at a rate of €40 per linear metre. This should cover up to 100% of construction costs depending on the underlying ground. Veon works with our clients to build high quality roads that last over 30 years with little maintenance required. Well designed and built harvesting roads add value to your plantation by increasing timber income and decreasing maintenance costs. Investors pay more for plantations with good harvesting roads, should you wish to sell your plantation in the future.
  •  Key benefits of a well-designed harvesting road;
    • Increases the asset value of your plantation
    • Reduces maintenance costs over the rotation
    • Improves accessibility of the plantation and quality. No other company in Ireland can match our technical or operational expertise in harvesting Irish forests and Veon foresters are trained to PSCS (project supervisor construction stage) standards.

Thinning

  • Why thin your plantation?
    • If your plantation is 15 years or older, the forest premium which you have been receiving will run out soon. So, how do you maintain your income when the premium is gone? Thinning your plantation will provide periodic income tax free. Not many forest owners realise that over the forests’ rotation, the income from thinning and harvesting will dwarf forestry premiums if the plantation is managed correctly.
    • Forestry thinning is the removal of low value stems. This allows better performing trees to increase in volume in a shorter period of time while also developing into more valuable timber. It is a vital part of plantation management and increases profitability in the long term. Thinning provides intermediate income at 3-5 year intervals.
  • When should I thin my forest?
    • It is essential that thinning is carried out at the right time to maximise income and this can start as early as 15 years with certain species. Income from first thinning is low in value, however as the plantation matures, the income from subsequent thinnings substantially increases. The majority of income is secured at the end of rotation when the crop is clear-felled.
    • To see if your plantation is ready for thinning why not try our Forestry Thinning calculator? The thinning calculator will tell you if your plantation is ready for thinning and what to do next.
  • Broadleaf Thinning (Woodland Improvement Scheme) WIS
    • Tending and thinning are essential operations to produce quality timber in broadleaf forests and also improve the future timber crop value.
    • Broadleaves are planted very close together to encourage upward growth and reduce branches. Once the canopy starts to close, the trees begin to shade each other. At this stage, the lower quality trees should be removed.
    • Tending/thinning is normally carried out when the average height reaches 8 metres. Final crop trees should be selected based on their quality and from then on thinning should be based around these trees.
    • Often the timber removed is not big enough to pay for itself which is why there are grants available from the Dept. of Agriculture to carry out these operations. The 1st thin grant is worth up to €750 per ha with the 2nd thin grant up to €500 per ha

Clearfells

  • Veon has over 30 years’ experience in harvesting from first thinning through to clear-fell. We have developed robust and strong systems to control harvesting operations, maximising income generated from your plantation while ensuring that the plantation maintains its productive potential.
  • Veon’s harvesting service is unsurpassed. This service is a complete harvesting service where we project manage the entire operation working with you to achieve your desired result. CCTV security cameras are utilized on-site to protect your timber from theft.

Veon’s harvesting service

  • Timber measurement and marketing
    • At the outset, Veon prepares the plantation by accurately measuring the standing timber. This data is then analysed by professional foresters to determine the appropriate policy for your plantation. Veon will then offer the timber for sale by tender to our select timber buyers. Once price is agreed, we provide a comprehensive timber sales contract and look after the payment arrangements. Before the operation begins Veon prepares a harvest plan and performs a health and safety assessment.
  • Harvesting supervision
    • A key part of Veon’s harvesting service is supervision. We supervise harvesting contractors to make sure the right trees are taken and to minimise damage to remaining trees and the environment. We believe that all thinnings should be marked to ensure that the best trees remain and that the plantation is thinned consistently throughout. Timber marking is vital, as badly executed thinning can seriously affect the value of your final crop and significantly reduce your final forestry investment returns.
  • Post-harvesting crop and inventory management

    • Once the timber is brought to the roadside, we track timber movements using our timber docket tracking system to ensure that all timber is accounted for. At the end of the operation we provide you with a Post Harvesting Report which reports on financial outcome, volume harvested, mapping and issues arising. We then enter your plantation into our system to remind you when it is time for the next operation.

Timber Marking Services

  • What is forestry thinning?
Thinning is the removal of low value stems allowing better performing trees to increase in volume in a shorter period of time while also developing into valuable timber. The process of thinning or clear-felling generates cash income for forest owners from their trees. This can provide a generous supplementary income particularly when premiums are coming to an end.
  • Why is thinning necessary?
Thinning is an essential part of the forest rotation. If the thinning operations are carried out correctly with the small and low value timber being removed first, the forest will grow at a higher value rate, as the stronger and more vigorous trees are left behind to produce the maximum number of high value logs and consequently increase profitability.
  • The importance of timber marking
The only way to ensure the correct trees are being taken out of the forest during each thinning is to mark the trees to be removed. Timber marking has definite advantages over harvester driver selections. Registered foresters select and paint-mark individual trees that need to be removed. This ensures trees with growth defects or those competing with high quality trees are removed. This process is carried out before the harvesting crew ever arrives on site. Marking gives the landowner a chance to look at the stand before harvesting begins to see if any changes are needed. By marking the timber, a higher price is achieved for the thinnings as the harvesting crew do not waste time selecting trees to be removed.
  • Why select Veon as your harvesting and thinning contractor?
Veon is the only private company to offer this unique service to private forest owners. This allows for full control over the thinning and removes any bias that timber buyers might have going into a stand that hasn’t been marked.Once the stand has been marked, Veon foresters measure the whole stand electronically which provides them with a report of expected return, essential for a forest owners cash flow management. Once operations have been completed, VEON carry out another measurement of your crop to ascertain the timber that is left after the harvesting. This again is vital for forest owners, giving them an idea of projected volumes and harvest schedules down the line.
