Forest Thinning Operation

Photos from first thinning by VEON forest managers of this Norway spruce plantation in Co. Roscommon earlier this week.

Thinning must be carried out carefully as the removal of too few trees will result in a greater proportion of smaller diameter trees of lesser timber value. Removing too many trees allows light penetrate deep into the canopy resulting in heavy branches and knots, which reduce wood quality and limit its range of potential uses.
