Plenty of character in this veteran beech (Fagus sylvatica) spotted by a Veon arboriculturist during a tree survey today in Co. Wicklow.
The actively growing southern bracket fungus (Ganoderma australe) can be seen growing from a large crown gall, which is essentially an agitated cambium growing irregularly due to a microbe.
Ganoderma australe is a common perennial bracket fungus that causes white heart rot in trees of the genera Tilia (limes), Quercus (oaks), Platanus (Sycamore etc) and Aesculus (Horse Chestnut) and in this example Fagus sylvatica. In the early stages of colonisation it is thought to be a parasitic fungus, but as the tree dies it becomes saprobic, as most parasitic fungi do. The perennial fruitbodies of Gamoderma australe appear mainly on the lower trunk, most often near to the base.
Veon arboriculturalists plays a vital role in tree surveys, ensuring proper tree management and preservation. They identify tree species, assess their health, and evaluate structural integrity using visual inspections and specialized equipment. Arboriculturalists conduct risk assessments to determine potential hazards to people, property, and infrastructure, informing decisions on tree retention, pruning, or removal to mitigate risks.
Their expertise extends to advocating for tree preservation, recommending management techniques like pruning and protection measures during construction to minimize damage. Arboriculturalists consider the ecological impact of tree management, prioritizing biodiversity and ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and habitat provision.
Veon arboriculturalists communicate survey findings and recommendations clearly to stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making.
Arboriculturalists also provide ongoing monitoring to track changes in tree health and stability, enabling early intervention for emerging issues. Their role encompasses comprehensive assessment, risk management, preservation advocacy, environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, consultation, and ongoing monitoring, essential for sustainable tree management and ecosystem vitality.
