One sided basal decay can cause compression failure in the sound wood fibres on either side of the cavity. The now over-stretched wood reaches its ultimate tensile strength, resulting in shear failure. Luckily this tree never fell, as it was held up by a neighbour, allowing us to see the failure process more clearly, and affording the tree a few more years of life.
