Heritage Week Talk with Veon Ecology in Longford

In July and August, Veon Ecology conducted a mammal survey at three sites in County Longford on behalf of Longford County Councils Biodiversity Officer, Adam Mulvihill. Head of Veon Ecology Division, Pascal Mc Kenna gave a talk on the diversity of tree species present at Derrycassin Woods to those who attended the Heritage Week talk. This work conducted by Veon Ecology was to gather baseline data on the mammal species present in Derrycassin Woods, Newcastle Woods and Mount Jessop Bog. This was achieved through a combination of small mammal trapping, tracks and signs surveys and the use of trail cameras.

Derrycassin woods proved to be the most species rich site with bank vole, woodmice, brown rat, pinemarten, Irish hare, fox, red squirrel and badger all being positively identified. It was at this site that a mammal walk took place on 20th August to discuss the findings, survey methods and general information on the mammal species found at Derrycassin. Despite rather unpredictable weather, the walk received a good turn out and we had the pleasure of engaging with a number of interested parties, many of whom walked the woods weekly, but were unaware of the great diversity of species present there.
