Veon Arboriculture encounters Eifel Tower Fungus in Co. Louth

Veon arboriculturists encountered Eiffel Tower fungus (Inonotus dryadeus) that had colonised the base of this veteran oak (Quercus robur), prompting the buttress formation that resembles the base of the Eiffel Tower, hence the name.

This selective white rot fungus decays the compressively strong wood, leaving the cellulose and hemicellulose. It is mainly found on oak species, which shows tolerance to the fungus due to its reactive buttress development. Indeed, it is an effective response as despite the extent of the colonisation, this tree was able to weather the effects of Storm Darragh!

Veon’s arboriculture specialists are qualified to carry out a range of assessments and surveys to determine the health, quality and safety and protection of trees on sites. In conjunction with our other specialists in Veon Ecology and Veon Forestry we offer unrivalled experience and expertise.
