Spotted by Veon ornithologists in the woodlands of County Kerry today – the bold and beautiful Great Tit! This little songbird, Ireland’s largest tit species, is a year-round resident, brightening up gardens, parks, and forests with its striking black cap, white cheeks, and vibrant yellow chest.
A lively and intelligent bird, the Great Tit is known for its curious nature and varied calls, often adapting its song depending on its surroundings. It’s a frequent visitor to bird feeders, especially in winter, where it loves pecking at sunflower seeds and peanuts.
Right now, as spring approaches, these little beauties are busy claiming territories and searching for nesting spots- often choosing tree holes, crevices, or even nest boxes to raise their chicks. Their cheerful, two-note song is a familiar sound across the countryside.
If you’re out in Kerry’s stunning landscapes, keep an ear out for their calls and an eye on the branches as you might just spot one of these feathered gems flitting through the trees!
