In support of National Tree Week 2023, Rathwood Furniture and Garden Experience Centre in Co. Carlow has become a Veon Climate Leadership Partner and has planted over 1,000 trees in their Fox’s Park woods over the last year.
Transforming their woodland from a dense forest, with no ground growth, to a multi-layered ecosystem is the goal and this is being achieved with careful thinning and planting of new species which is key to avoiding tree loss due to wind. By allowing light shine through the forest canopy, the new species can thrive and each layer of the forest will develop its own ecosystem and increase overall biodiversity.
The introduction of new birds and insects also attracts hedgehogs, badgers, barn owls, foxes and other animals, which helps the forest naturally control its own ecosystem.
