Veon attends the Pro Silva Ireland 2023 excursion to Denmark

Daragh Little, MD Forestry at Veon, attended the Pro Silva Ireland excursion to Denmark which commenced at the St. Hjøllund Estate. Foresters examined the conversion of monocultures in 2nd generation red spruce and sitka towards a 3rd generation forest-structure with several tree species, where the future rejuvenation of the forest in the 4th or 5th generation will end up being primarily based on self-rejuvenation.

The group of Irish foresters also attended Pro Silva Denmark Niels Peter Dalsgaard Jensen’s private forest at “Kogleskoven” which covers 18 hectares. This forest has been transformed over the last 18 years from a clearcut system to constant cover system (continuous cover forestry).

Commenting on the Pro Silva Ireland event, Daragh Little said that their Danish colleagues were perfect hosts and very welcoming. “We learned a lot about Danish forestry and the challenges of converting even-aged conifer woodlands to closeR-to-nature silviculture systems. Danish forest regulation leaves the management of the forest to the forest owner with a minimum of state intervention, enabling Danish forest owners make the correct and timely sylvicultural decisions about their own forests”.
