Veon showcase Coollattin Estate Arboretum to Finnish Foresters

Daragh Little MD Forestry of Veon, hosted a group of Finnish Foresters at the historical Coolattin estate this week.  Whilst enjoying the sunshine, Daragh gave a lecture to the group on the fascinating history of forest management at Coolattin which goes back to the year 1600.  Coolattin was a renowned forest for producing quality Oak used in such buildings as Westminster Hall, Trinity College and Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The Finnish foresters were shown how Veon is rejuvenating the woodlands through harvesting mature stands, replanting and conversion to CCF in other stands. Invasive species control was also discussed, as the estate has experienced several invasive species which are being managed and controlled over time. Veon is creating an Arboretum of specimen trees from around the world and this work commenced in 2019 with the planting of some 200 trees, dominated by Oak but including many other species of conifer and broadleaves.

“The sylvicultural and ecological restoration of the Coollattin Estate has continued to gain pace over the years. With one of the most impressive collection of oak trees in the country, the Coollattin Estate boasts over 35 oak species and in excess of 30,000 oak trees. In addition to a variety of Eucalyptus regnans from Tasmania and South East Australia, Patagonian cypress has also been planted which adds variety to this truly unique collection” said Daragh Little.
