Careful windrowing on Veon managed site in Co. Leitrim preparing the ground for new forest planting

At the end of a tree crop’s rotation and when the forest has been clearfelled, the landowner must replant with species specified in the felling licence within two years of the felling licence expiring. On this Veon managed site in County Leitrim, a careful windrowing operation is taking place to ensure that the site is prepared to optimise an ideal planting environment for the new saplings.

Windrowing is a forestry operation whereby tree tops and branches, left behind after clearfell and extraction, are gathered by machine into rows or piles onsite, piled in rows typically 10-12m apart, to facilitate access for reforestation.

Windrows are a form of deadwood, which is an important element of every forest environment, providing habitat and food sources for plants, fungi and animals.

Veon managed the complete harvesting process for this client, including marketing the standing timber and obtaining the highest price in a competitive transparent bid process, and is now overseeing the replanting of this site.
