Coillte has designated 90,000 ha of their estate to be managed for biodiversity. Much of this area is under forest where the opportunity to create, restore and enhance biodiversity exists. Redesigning these areas will provide greater species diversification and ecological and climate benefits. This is largely done through the conversion of forests to mixed or native woodlands as appropriate through low impact silvicultural systems such as Continuous Cover Forestry.
Veon’s forestry team is helping this process, working with Coillte and ecologists to develop plans for forests in the north west of Ireland. Veon’s role is to assess forest suitability for conversion, develop long term plans for the future management of the forests and implement these plans in conjunction with Coillte’s ecology, harvesting and estates teams.
Irish forests help combat climate change, supply sustainable wood products to help build our homes, provide valuable habitats for our wildlife, and offer places for people to visit and enjoy adding to our health and wellbeing.
