This line of Himalayan birch (Betula utilis subsp. Jacquemontii) trees make a fine landscape feature in this public park in Co. Dublin. Unfortunately, many of them have been vandalised and snapped (circled in red) using the crossbar that was installed to support them.
When planting trees in areas where there is the possibility of vandalism, alternative support systems should be considered, such as an underground guying system for larger trees, or a low, diagonal stake for smaller trees. These systems not only remove the crossbar that is used as a fulcrum point for snapping, but they allow more movement in the tree so that it can develop the strength it needs to support itself.
