If there was ever any doubt that climate change could negatively affect us, Storm Éowyn, the fifth storm of the 2024–25 European windstorm season, has starkly demonstrated the destructive power of nature. This exceptionally powerful and record-breaking extratropical cyclone struck Ireland on 24th January, causing extensive damage and widespread disruption to transport networks, as well as electrical and water infrastructure—repairs for which are expected to take weeks.
In the aftermath, Veon arboriculturalists have been actively conducting tree risk assessments for property owners, apartment management companies, local county councils, and forest and landowners with roadside tree exposure.
Assessing tree health is essential to mitigating the risk of injury to the public while also ensuring a resilient stock of weather-resistant trees. These trees, in turn, continue to play a vital role in improving air quality, sequestering carbon, and enhancing habitats, particularly in urban environments.
