In a bold move toward sustainability and environmental responsibility, VEON which is a leading ecology and forest management consultancy, proudly announces its decision to transition its nationwide fleet of 22 vehicles to Certa’s hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
This strategic initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, reflecting its dedication to minimizing its carbon footprint and promoting a cleaner, greener future.
Adopting HVO across the fleet represents a significant step forward in the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its environmental stewardship. This innovative fuel choice boasts a lower carbon intensity compared to traditional fossil fuels, making it a sustainable alternative for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing HVO for its van fleet, VEON is making a tangible impact on both local air quality and global climate change.
Trevor McHugh, managing director commercial of VEON expressed enthusiasm about the company’s transition to HVO, stating, “At VEON, we recognise the critical role businesses play in shaping a sustainable future. By adopting HVO for our van fleet, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also contributing to the broader environmental goals of our community and the planet. This move underscores our commitment to ESG practices and positions us as a leader in sustainable ecology services and forestry management. Furthermore, we hope that as more companies follow our lead on this, so the increased demand will enable greater expansion of supplies of HVO which we believe forms a vital part of our sustainability journey.”
HVO is known for its lower carbon intensity compared to traditional diesel fuel, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. This move supports VEON’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Largely derived from waste vegetable oils, HVO is a renewable and sustainable energy source. By choosing HVO, VEON is contributing to the promotion of sustainable practices within the ecology and forest management industry whilst simultaneously supporting indigenous Irish produced fuel which would otherwise have become a wasteful by-product.
Research demonstrates that HVO combustion produces fewer pollutants than regular fossil fuel-derived diesel, leading to improved local air quality. As VEON operates through its national network of regional offices in Kilkenny, Newcastle West, Oranmore, Carrick-on-Shannon, Edgeworthstown and Leopardstown in Dublin, this transition positively impacts the areas in which the company conducts its operations.
The adoption of Certa’s HVO aligns with VEON’s broader commitment to ESG principles, demonstrating leadership in corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship.
This transition to HVO for the company’s van fleet is part of VEON’s comprehensive sustainability strategy. The company continues to explore innovative solutions and technologies to further enhance its environmental performance while maintaining a focus on social responsibility and strong governance.
“Sustainability is at VEON’s core, and we recognise that, as we work with clients on their sustainability journey, we in VEON must also take a lead in our sector. Our team must travel far and wide across the country and we see the use of HVO as an important solution to our fleet’s emissions. With Certa being the first energy operator in Ireland to open a fully-fledged HVO fuel station at the new “Forecourt of the Future” in Liffey Valley in Dublin, we are delighted to embark on this ESG journey with them.”
Trevor noted that this “is only the beginning of the journey and as Certa continues to expand its network of unmanned forecourts to offer HVO at all fuel pumps, so we will be using ever greater amounts of HVO to displace our use of traditional diesel fuels. Furthermore, we look forward to engaging with our suppliers to identify where else HVO can be utilised and thereby further reduce the use of traditional diesel fuel” stated Trevor McHugh.
VEON is the first Irish ecology and forest management consultancy company to embark on its fleet transition to Certa HVO and encourages all other companies across the industry to follow its leadership and commitment to ESG principles and strive to balance economic success with social and environmental stewardship, ensuring a positive impact on the wider community it serves.
