Natural Capital Assessment Report

Natural Capital Assessment Report

With the imperative to better protect the environment, a Natural Capital Assessment Report helps identify risks and opportunities, viewed through a natural capital lens, to facilitate organisations to aid and enhance their role within their communities.  As a starting point, the Natural Capital Assessment Report, or NCAR, establishes a baseline reporting on “what’s there now” in terms of the biodiversity and is an essential tool to any landowner interested in understanding the protection requirements, and expansion opportunities, of the biodiversity on the subject lands.

Natural capital consists of the stock of renewable and non-renewable natural assets, which combine to provide both abiotic and ecosystem services.

The quality of the natural environment is crucial to species’ survival and the promotion of biodiversity. However, significant challenges exist in incorporating the environment into holistic, organisational, and national planning.

While the economic benefits of development are more easily calculated, it is important to also have comparable information for environmental natural capital assets.

Veon Ecology provides expertise in this area by quantifying values attributable to abiotic and ecosystems This expertise provides decision makers with the data they need to make informed decisions with full cognisance of the risks involved in the deliberations and outcomes.

Veon Ecology has already completed a series of Natural Capital Assessment Reports (NCAR) on over 1,500 acres of forestry in Ireland.  This reporting has occurred across  numerous commercial forest properties located nationwide with the owners now working with our team to both protect and enhance the identified biodiversity within their Natural Capital Assessment Reports.

Through the baseline survey, the NCAR report establishes the existing biodiversity across the subject properties.  The NCAR examines each specific property in detail, reporting on a broad range of environmental and ecology aspects, including but not limited to:

  • River and Waterbody Network (Hydrology)
  • Soil Profile (Geology)
  • Protected sites
  • Archaeology
  • Ecology

As an outcome to these reports, Veon Ecology’s team will identify strategies to extend and maximise the subject properties level of biodiversity to further enrich the biodiversity that is already present.

As a Registered CIEEM practice, Veon Ecology is Ireland’s leading Ecology Consultancy and has consulted on major infrastructural projects from Motorways to Windfarms, forests to large land estates as well as a variety of other Land Use Change projects
