Veon is looking to recruit a Lead Ecologist to join our growing team throughout Ireland. This role is based in our Kilkenny office and there is an option of partial remote working for the successful candidate.

Our company offers a wide variety of Ecology, Forestry and Arboriculture services all of which will provide you with a range of experience in these fields.The role will primarily be involved in undertaking ecological surveys, reporting and project management to a high standard and to tight deadlines and contributing to the knowledge base of our growing, sustainable, and successful company.

Responsibilities of Lead Ecologist Role

  • Compile technically robust ecology and environmental reports to support client needs.
  • Win new business for Veon Ecology through professional networks, and by writing and submitting public tenders.
  • Assist with training, coaching and mentoring other members of the Ecology  team.
  • Perform the duties of an Ecology Clerk of Works.
  • Perform ecological site inspections, site surveys and such other works on clients’ lands.
  •  Provide advice and guidance to the wider Veon team on ecological issues as they arise, working as a team member to share knowledge, expertise and learning with colleagues.
  • Collate and store ecological data and reports pertaining to client sites or projects and maintain these records to be easily accessible on Veon’s computer systems.
  • Compile technically robust ecology reports to support forestry licence applications and to liaise with the Forest Service on applications as they relate to ecology. These will include, but not be limited to, Pre-screening reports, Appropriate Assessment reports and Natura Impact Statements.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation and guidance to ensure company compliance and interpret this for colleagues and the Management Team.
  • Manage a large workload efficiently including scheduling of work and communicating with team members and clients in a timely manner.
  • Manage time and project delivery in an organised and proactive manner to ensure smooth delivery of reports and projects.
  • Input into company policies relating to the protection and enhancement of biodiversity within our clients’ forests

Requirements of Lead Ecologist Role

  • Relevant degree in Ecology or related discipline is essential.
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Membership of relevant professional institute is desirable.
  • Proven leadership ability and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience of compiling technically robust ecology reports. These will include, but not limited to, Pre-screening reports, Appropriate Assessment reports and Natura Impact Statements
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly MS Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to effectively communicate with a range of stakeholders and negotiate practical solutions.
  • Ability to manage projects to tight deadlines
  • Previous experience in GIS including ArcGIS and QGIS is desirable.
  • Full driving licence is essential.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Ireland.
  • Capable of both working well alone and as also part of the team when
    required
